In the routine of daily activities, and the eagerness to obtain quantitative results, organizations run the risk of becoming absorbed in reductionist notions concerning their task environments (internal and external). This position has counterproductive effects on the learning and renovation capacities of the own organizations, reducing their success and permanence possibilities. The properties and tools of the systemic approach provide information about relevant issues and problems that, in countless cases, are unnoticed by administration and management schemes of rationalist character. Different arguments holding this thesis are exposed through the analysis of several topics and examples.

Los sistemas adaptativos complejos son abiertos, en el sentido de la termodinámica, y no son lineales, lo que significa que no son frecuentes las relaciones causa-efecto y que sus parámetros comúnmente cambian por lo que son impredecibles, por lo tanto, sus problemas no pueden ser resueltos como si se tratara de sistemas lineales. Sin embargo, es común el análisis lineal en las ciencias de la vida, lo que ha llevado, en el caso del control de enfermedades en las plantas, a controles lineales cuyas consecuencias son, por ejemplo, la anarquía biológica, el uso de resistencia vertical y la protección vegetal a través de químicos. Research reported in this feature identifies a convergence of interpretations regarding the threshold dynamics of complex ecological systems. This convergence has arisen from a diverse set of investigations addressing rangeland ecosystem dynamics, disease transmission, and fluctuations in the populations of insect pests. Effective application of the threshold concept to ecosystem management will require development of more robust linkages between non-equilibrium theory and protocols to identify triggers that initiate threshold conditions, feedback loops that establish system resilience, and developmental trajectories and attributes of potential alternative stable states. The Evolution of an Ecosystem Approach: the Diamond Schematic and an Adaptive Methodology for Ecosystem Sustainability and Health Ecology and Society

Over the past 15 yr, an international network of researchers has developed and tested a methodology for integrating complex systems theories into sustainable development projects. Drawing on our best theoretical understanding of complex systems and combining it with best practices of community engagement drawn from a wide variety of sources, we have developed a methodology that is theoretically sound and practically effective. AMESH, an Adaptive Methodology for Ecosystem Sustainability and Health, has emerged from, and been tested in, Nepal, Kenya, Canada, and Peru.
